The first job for which I ever applied was as a distributor for Grit magazine. It was like a paper route delivering the mag to subscribers.
I think.
This was maybe 45 years ago, I forget details.
I was about six years old and I lived in inner-city Chicago.
And Grit is a magazine focused on “Rural American Know-How”.
I have forgotten how I was ever exposed to a magazine full of articles like “The Best Sheep Breeds” and “Establish New Farm Land Avoiding Pitfalls with Utility Lines, Driveways, and More”.
But it was probably through one of those Scholastic book fairs that were one of the highlights of school for kids like me.
Weeks later, they sent me a very nice note that, while they appreciated my interest, they did not do much business in Chicago.
