I go to therapy. I really debated getting a black therapist. But, instead, I have a white female one.
I like the distance. It seems counter-intuitive, but I don’t know that I would speak as freely to a black person. I don’t think therapy should be like talking to your friend or your wife or your pastor.
For me, one of the best things about therapy is the sense that you are speaking to someone outside of your circle.
Not that I don’t have white friends, but I don’t really worry about running into my therapist at the chicken and waffles joint, either.
Then again, I’m not wrestling with a lot of daily racial frustration, either. If I were, I would probably make a different decision.
