Years ago, I had lunch with a respected lawyer in his office in a downtown Chicago highrise. He would have been about your MILs age, I bet.

I was young and afraid he would want to go somewhere expensive. I was picking his brain so I would have to treat. Instead, lunch was 4 hot dogs heated in a pot on a hot plate in his office.

When we were done, having eaten one hot dog each, he rinsed off the two that were left and put them back in a small fridge he kept by his desk.

He’d grown up poor and the need to waste food had never left him.
